Sustainability in lighting begins in design.

Sustainability in lighting begins in design. Good lighting design will see perfect, even light levels with very low wattage per square meter. Light selection is paramount to achieving sustainability. LED lighting doesn't automatically make a low powered, sustainable design. Many LED light fixtures are narrow beam, so they do not throw light around a room efficiently. The common LED downlight is a good example of this.

An LED downlight will need to be spaced close. an average lounge room has from 10+ downlights installed meaning 10 x 10W =100W of power. Where as a glass pendant will use a 15W LED lamp and illuminate an entire room.

Well designed light fittings will last for years and at the end of the lights functional life can be maintained and fixed rather than being replaced and the old product thrown out into landfill.
